An Introduction to Appraisal

This pre-conference course is offered in support of teachers and researchers interested in becoming more familiar with the system of appraisal in Systemic Functional Linguistics as a framework modeling evaluative meaning in discourse (Martin 2000, Martin & White 2005, Martin & Rose 2007). The workshop will move between theory and practice. The system of appraisal will be introduced and located within its broader theoretical framework. We will spend time getting familiar with each of the sub-systems, namely attitude, graduation and engagement, (as far as time allows) with plentiful examples and workshop tasks to assist. Examples of how appraisal has been put to work in research and in teaching will also be available to participants.
